Gas Distribution Layer
The GDL is a porous layer between the bipolar plate and the electrochemically active layer, usually consisting of carbon fleece or carbon paper.
- Gas distribution: It ensures that the reaction gases are distributed evenly over the entire surface of the catalyst layer.
- Water management: It drains the water produced as a reaction product (product water) to prevent the pores from “flooding.”
- Current conduction: As an electrically conductive material, it establishes contact between the catalyst and the bipolar plates.
