Catalysts
A catalyst is a substance that accelerates a chemical reaction without being consumed itself. It lowers the activation energy of the reaction so that it can proceed faster or at lower temperatures.
Precious metals such as platinum, iridium, palladium, or ruthenium are usually used, often applied to a carrier material such as carbon black.
