MEAs
membrane electrode assemblies
- Electrochemical reaction: The MEA enables the spatial separation of oxidation and reduction while allowing ion conduction through the membrane.
- Mass transport: It regulates the supply of reaction gases to the catalyst and the removal of the resulting product water.
- Electrical separation: The internal membrane electrically isolates the electrodes from each other so that the electrons must flow through an external circuit.
- Structure: The MEA consists of a catalyst-coated membrane (CCM) and a gas diffusion layer on each side, or a membrane and three gas diffusion electrodes.
- The MEA significantly determines the power density, efficiency, and service life of the entire fuel cell system.
