PEM Single Cell
The single cell is the simplest form of PEM fuel cell. It consists of two metal current collector plates, one on each side, two graphite gas distribution plates, and graphite paper inside. This is coated with a platinum catalyst and sandwiched between the proton-conducting Nafion™ membrane. The cell requires hydrogen and oxygen to generate electricity. Cells labeled -REF also contain a reference electrode. This consists of a high-purity platinum wire inserted into the anode flow field so that it is in direct contact with the hydrogen on the anode side. This allows the electrode potentials to be measured separately in relation to this reference electrode.
